Communication design

This field includes

Designers in this field design and present visual information to convey information, ideas and concepts.

Designers in this field work primarily in a two dimensional space. However, sometimes cross over into three dimensional space when designing packaging nets, surface graphics or merchandising.

This field of design is often concerned with layout and typography.

Distinguishing characteristics

The specific use of grid and other layout and typographical conventions.

Surface graphics and three-dimensional packaging nets.

Pictorial illustration techniques.

Vector, raster and desktop publishing digital applications, semiotics, signs and relevant two dimensional presentation formats.

Industrial design

This field includes

Designers in this field create visual information for manufactured objects and products. These include any manufactured objects ranging from pens, watches, mobile phones, toys, kitchen appliances, TVs, furniture to cars.

Designers in this field typically work in the three dimensional space and use drawing methods including isometric, perspective and 3rd Angle orthogonal drawing. Currently, industrial designers use CAD software to model products and output two dimensional drawings for fabrication.

When doing the VCAA Examination for Visual Communication Design, students need to take care that if they are asked to analyse the purpose visual communications depicting products in this field they must realise that the correct field of analysis may be that of communication design.

Distinguishing characteristics

Manual and digital three-dimensional drawing methods. Our study requires isometric and 1 and 2 point perspective methods for this field.

The two-dimensional drawing
method for this field is third-angle orthogonal drawing. The use of specific Australian Standards conventions for technical drawing.

Designers in this field use a range of digital-based applications including CAD applications. CAD applications created deigns in virtual, measured space.

A range of manual and digital model making techniques including CNC cutting and 3-d printing.

Environmental design

This field includes

Designers in this field design what is know as the 'built environment'. They design and present visual information for design of the built and/ or constructed world. This includes town planning, landscape design and landscape architecture, architecture, interior design and interior architecture, set and stage design.

Designers in this field also typically work in the three dimensional space and use drawing methods including planometric, perspective and plans and elevations. Currently environmental designers use CAD software to model spaces and output two dimensional drawings and specification schedules.

Our study requires planometric and 1 and 2 point perspective methods for this field.

The two-dimensional drawing
method for this field is called Plans and Elevations. The use of specific Australian Standards conventions for technical drawing.

Designers in this field use a range of digital-based applications including CAD applications. CAD applications created deigns in virtual, measured space.

A range of manual and digital model making techniques including CNC cutting and 3-d printing.
